The European Respiratory Society (ERS) has offered over 300 awards to its membership since 1992 [1]. This year, the ERS celebrates 30 years of recognising the excellence, contributions and involvement of members within the society. Recently, the ERS has gradually expanded its portfolio of awards by bestowing a wide array of prized titles and has adapted to the ever-changing needs of a growing ERS membership [2]. Under the directorship of the 2019–2022 ERS Fellowships and Awards Director, Prof. Louise Donnelly, the scientific awards programme has been further developed to reflect the ERS membership.
