Despite the rich and controversial history of the concept of “dysfunctional breathing”, it remains poorly understood what dysfunctional breathing is. This is shown by the variety of terms that have been used as near synonyms of dysfunctional breathing: hyperventilation syndrome, functional, psychogenic or somatoform breathing disorder, medically unexplained dyspnoea, functional dyspnoea or breathlessness, disproportionate breathlessness, sighing dyspnoea, and breathing pattern disorder [1, 2].
