Abstract
Background:Statins have cholesterol-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects, and has been associated with reduced risk of asthma in some previous studies. To determine the veracity and magnitude of the association between statin use and susceptibility to asthma we performed a meta-analysis.
Methods:We screened the medical literature from 1966-2019 and performed a meta-analysis to compare the effect of statin use vs no statin use on asthma susceptibility.
Results:Aggregating data from 6 studies, the odds ratio for asthma in statin users compared with non-users was significantly reduced at 0.82 (95% CI: 0.76-0.88). When analysing the studies considered of high quality in which asthma was diagnosed by a physician, the patients were <50 years, or study size was ≥5000, the trend remained the same, that patients receiving statins had reduced risk for asthma.
Conclusions:The results show that individuals on statins have a lower risk of asthma than non-users.
